An introductory course designed to stimulate understanding and application of both the aesthetic and practical aspects of scenery and sound as expressive media of theatrical design. The student will learn technology, organization, and design skills; insight into to the "duties" of designers through practical experience; and strengthen their design vocabulary through projects and discussion.

Topics in Theatre Design: Scenery & Sound:
An introductory course designed to stimulate understanding and application of both the aesthetic and practical aspects of scenery and sound as expressive media of theatrical design. The student will learn technology, organization, and design skills; insight into to the "duties" of designers through practical experience; and strengthen their design vocabulary through projects and discussion.
Special Topics in Theatre Design & Technology – Computer Assisted Drafting:
An introduction to techniques, procedures, and equipment employed in drafting with an emphasis on its use in theatrical production. It includes demonstration and practical experience in scale measurement, reading of drafting, fundamentals of hand drafting, graphic standards, and basic through intermediate use of computers in creating and communicating designs and technical plans for use in live entertainment. This course will primarily use Vectorworks software, but references to other software packages may be included in order to familiarize the student with commonalities between CAD systems.

Special Topics in Theatre Design & Technology - Props Construction:
An exploration of techniques, procedures, and equipment employed in of different types of props for performing arts events: including practical experience in research, creation and reading of drafting/plans, hands-on construction practices, performer education and safety, equipment movement and handling, and concepts in theatrical design.
Production Lab:
Individually scheduled lab course designed to provide experience in technical and, when applicable, performance aspects of theatre and dance production, participation in shop and production run crews, as well as rehearsals and performances, teaches the design, technical and performance process that transforms visions of directors, choreographers, and designers into reality on stage for audiences. The student will learn through a variety of work, and possible performance assignments, how to perform skilled tasks in theatre and dance productions and to collaborate with a production team.
Professional Practices:
A capstone course for all theatre majors is focused on skill building, self-reflection, and entrepreneurship. Topics covered include arts company management, starting up a nonprofit theatre company, and self-marketing in the field. It is also a writing intensive course that requires students to demonstrate proficiency in writing for the specific discipline within the theatre that they plan to enter.

Production Technology:
An introduction to techniques and equipment employed in executing the visual elements of a production. These include the reading of plans and elevations, the construction, painting and handling of scenery, the handling and construction of stage properties and effects, the execution of sound and stage lighting. Production:
A practicum producing two realized mainstage plays, a dance concert, and additional laboratory shows each semester. Students serve in cast and crew assignments developing practical and aesthetic skills in the context of a typical regional theatre schedule/environment. (replaced by Production Lab).

In addition, worked toward the organization of company’s props storage and made recommendations on improvement of the same. Served as liaison between company staff, designers, scene shop, and IATSE house crew. Responsible for shopping, props design and creations, and supervision of two interns.

Manage a crew of artisans, interns, and a shopper in the acquisition and construction of all properties for a four opera, rotating repertory season. Responsible for budgeting ($7,500 per show), researching antiques and materials, creation of working drawings, scheduling and provision of rehearsal pieces, implementing shop safety policies, and daily communication with designers, directors, and other production staff. Production designers have included John Conklin, Donald Eastman, Paul Steinberg, David Zinn, Allen Moyer, and Michael Yeargan (designer of the 1999 world premier of Central Park, commissioned by Glimmerglass, New York City Opera and WNET Great Performances).
