Scenic Technology I & II

An introduction (I) or advanced exploration (II) to techniques, procedures, and equipment employed in constructing the scenery of a theatrical production: including practical experience in creation and reading of drafting, stage and finish carpentry, metalworking and welding, basic theatre rigging, scenery movement and handling, stage properties, scenery finishing, and concepts in structural design.

Technology for the Performing Arts I & II

            An introductory (I) or advanced (II) exploration of techniques, procedures, and equipment employed in creating and implementing the lighting, sound, and media for performing arts events: including practical experience in creation and reading of drafting/plans, hands-on electrics practice, sound reinforcement, console programming, basic theatre rigging, equipment movement and handling, and concepts in theatrical design.

Topics in Theatre Design: Costumes & Lighting:

            An introductory course designed to stimulate understanding and application of both the aesthetic and practical aspects of scenery and sound as expressive media of theatrical design. The student will learn technology, organization, and design skills; insight into to the "duties" of designers through practical experience; and strengthen their design vocabulary through projects and discussion.

Topics in Theatre Design: Scenery & Sound:

            An introductory course designed to stimulate understanding and application of both the aesthetic and practical aspects of scenery and sound as expressive media of theatrical design. The student will learn technology, organization, and design skills; insight into to the "duties" of designers through practical experience; and strengthen their design vocabulary through projects and discussion.

 

Special Topics in Theatre Design & Technology – Computer Assisted Drafting:

            An introduction to techniques, procedures, and equipment employed in drafting with an emphasis on its use in theatrical production. It  includes demonstration and practical experience in scale measurement, reading of drafting, fundamentals of hand drafting, graphic standards, and basic through intermediate use of computers in creating and communicating designs and technical plans for use in live entertainment. This course will primarily use Vectorworks software, but references to other software packages may be included in order to familiarize the student with commonalities between CAD systems.

Special Topics in Theatre Design & Technology - Props Construction:

            An exploration of techniques, procedures, and equipment employed in of different types of props for performing arts events: including practical experience in research, creation and reading of drafting/plans, hands-on construction practices, performer education and safety, equipment movement and handling, and concepts in theatrical design.

           

Production Lab:

Individually scheduled lab course designed to provide experience in technical and, when applicable, performance aspects of theatre and dance production, participation in shop and production run crews, as well as rehearsals and performances, teaches the design, technical and performance process that transforms visions of directors, choreographers, and designers into reality on stage for audiences. The student will learn through a variety of work, and possible performance assignments, how to perform skilled tasks in theatre and dance productions and to collaborate with a production team.

 

Professional Practices:

A capstone course for all theatre majors is focused on skill building, self-reflection, and entrepreneurship. Topics covered include arts company management, starting up a nonprofit theatre company, and self-marketing in the field. It is also a writing intensive course that requires students to demonstrate proficiency in writing for the specific discipline within the theatre that they plan to enter.

Independent Study:

Arranged individual and small group coursework in supplemental areas of interest to myself and students.  These have included:

  • Embedded Electronics,

  • CAD for Theatre.

PAST COURSES:

Scene Design:

A studio course which provides the theory and application of artistic techniques employed in the

visual conception of a theatrical production. The students gain basic drafting skills, insight into to

the "duties" of a scene designer through practical experience, and strengthen their visual

vocabulary through drawing exercises and discussion.

Theatre Lighting Design:

A studio course providing study and application of the technology and art of lighting as an

expressive medium of theatrical design. Students learn basic electrics, lighting control,

instrumentation, and composition through practical experience, and strengthen their visual

vocabulary through research and discussion.

Special Topics in Theatre Design & Technology - Theatre Sound Design:

A studio course providing study and application of the technology and art of sound as an

expressive medium of theatrical design. Students learn basic mixing, recording, playback,

reinforcement, and composition through practical experience, and strengthen their aural design.

Production Technology:

An introduction to techniques and equipment employed in executing the visual elements of a production.  These include the reading of plans and elevations, the construction, painting and handling of scenery, the handling and construction of stage properties and effects, the execution of sound and stage lighting.  (replaced by Technology for the Performing Arts & Scenic Technology).

​

Production:

A practicum producing two realized mainstage plays, a dance concert, and additional laboratory shows each semester.  Students serve in cast and crew assignments developing practical and aesthetic skills in the context of a typical regional theatre schedule/environment. (replaced by Production Lab).

Served as Production Manager for Gianni Schicchi and Smile.  Oversaw hiring and wrote contracts for designers and staff.  Coordinated use of School of Drama facilities for production and performance needs.  Oversaw budget and purchasing needs.  Coordinated rehearsal needs with stage management; musical needs with orchestra manager; and publicity, program, and house needs with the School of Music Office. Oversaw use of student crews in producing and running the show, providing grading recommendations to school faculty.  Made recommendations on permanent safety, facility, and staffing needs for the School’s Kresge Theatre.

Completed set designs and created all construction drawings for LPPAC’s Professional Company production of TOMMY in concert. Working with Director Gavan Pamer and LPPACprofessional staff, designed and specified scenery for concert staging of The Who’s iconic rock opera. As a private contractor to a nationally recognized company, responsible for the provision of all stage and rehearsal props for four operas per season produced in IATSE (Local 3) houses.  Responsible for purchasing, creation and repair of small items, interpreting remounted designs, communication with originating companies, and direction of prop installation and set dressing.  In addition, worked toward the organization of company’s props storage and made recommendations on improvement of the same. Directors and Designers have included: Christopher Alden, James Robinson, Garnet Bruce, Leonard Foglia, Chas Rader-Schieber, David Zinn, Allen Moyer, Robert Dahlstrom, and John Conklin.

Coordinated installation and augmentation of pulled props packages for Cathy Rigby’s Peter Pan, CATS, Disney’s High School Musical, 42nd Street, Grease, and Carousel.  Served as liaison between company staff, designers, scene shop, and IATSE house crew.  Responsible for shopping, props design and creations, and supervision of two interns.

Properties Master

Glimmerglass Opera, Cooperstown, NY                                                

Manage a crew of artisans, interns, and a shopper in the acquisition and construction of all properties for a four opera, rotating repertory season. Responsible for budgeting ($7,500 per show), researching antiques and materials, creation of working drawings, scheduling and provision of rehearsal pieces, implementing shop safety policies, and daily communication with designers, directors, and other production staff. Production designers have included John Conklin, Donald Eastman, Paul Steinberg, David Zinn, Allen Moyer, and Michael Yeargan (designer of the 1999 world premier of Central Park, commissioned by Glimmerglass, New York City Opera and WNET Great Performances).

Built, changed-over and ran eight shows in a rotating repertory season of operettas.  Provided team leadership on large projects.

 

1994 Season

Centennial Theatre Festival, Simsbury, CT

Built & changed-over three shows in running repertory.  Additionally provided technical support for dance and music performances in the venue.
